This provides both mechanical and bio filtration of your pond. There should be a link to the pdf manual which will explain everything. I'm not sure if you can post a link here but if you do a search for "Laguna PowerFlo Max Instruction Manual" you will find it.Anyway, the first chamber (closest to the pump) is a bio-filter. It contains bio-max, a ceramic media which beneficial bacteria can colonize to convert toxic ammonia and nitrites to less toxic substances.
The 2nd and 3rd chambers are the same. They provide mechanical filtration, and are chambers that contain a large piece of foam which filters out particles in the pond water. The chamber closer to the pump gets clogged first, then the other chamber takes over, but eventually you will need to clean both these chambers when both get clogged up.
The reason you have 2 mechanical filtration chambers is so that you don't need to clean it so often! You will only need to take the filter apart to clean it when both 2 and 3 are clogged.
The stated capacity of this filter is for a 800 gallon pond. Of course it depends on how many fish you have in, but it seems rather small for a 800 gallon pond. I would probably use 2 of these for a 800 gallon pond. You can easily fit two of them together with a Y connector such as this: Hagen Laguna Y-Connector with Click-Fit Couplers, 3 at 1-1/2-Inch length
