ColorQ Pro 7 Pool Water Test Kit Reagent Refill Pack Review

I've had my ColorQ test kit for a couple of years and have been thrilled with it. The bottles were not empty yet but I was wondering if I needed to replace the reagent bottles. Looking at the Lamotte web site, they claim that the bottles need to be replaced after a certain amount of time ranging from 6 months to 2 years. Apparently, at least for some of the tests, this is true. When I got the new bottles (which were identical replacements for the original reagents, but with date codes indicating they were new) I ran a full test of my pool water with the old ( >2yrs old) bottles and with the brand new bottles. The results were as follows

Total chlorine and Free chlorine reagent had deteriorated. The expired reagents registered less chlorine than the new bottles. So I was actually using more chlorine than I needed to.

PH and Alkalinity showed no difference between old and new, but I threw away the old bottles to be safe

Calcium hardness registered lower on the old reagent, but not enough that it affected any action I took.

Cyanuric acid tablets, no difference, but these have a longer shelf life and in fact the old ones had not yet expired.

Bottom line, its probably best to go to the Lamotte web site and look at their recommendations on shelf life and replace as necessary.
