When wet, the rubber reinforce surface allows water to be wicked to the bottom of the mat away from foot traffic while providing a slip resistant surface. I bought this for a beach rental house to trap sand, and it is doing a great job at that. I am using it on the inside of the house. The only complaint is that it traps everything else including fabric fuzzies and human and dog hair - nothing wrong about that - but it is difficult to vacuum the more "linear" bits of debris out of it. Ordinary dust, dirt and sand come out without difficulty.
