To conserve energy, the YT1008 operates at two different modes, "Dim" and "Bright". At "Dim" mode, the built-in photocell will automatically activate the light and stay dim at dusk and turn off at dawn. When motion is detected within a range of 10 feet, the light will switch to bright and switch back to "Dim" after 30 seconds if no more motion is detected.

The failure rate is also a bit high. Actually, I love the light enough that I just purchased the six pack in addition to the twelve I already have around my home. Sadly, I can't give it a 5 star because thus far I have had issues with 25% of them not charging straight out of the box. Fortunately, Amazon is very good about seeing replacements are sent. I really love the light itself as it is a very inexpensive way to light around your home. At dusk, the light comes on with a dim bluish white light comparable to that of a full moon and when it detects movement, the light brightens for about 30 seconds. I am a dog owner with a fairly large yard. It's really nice to know where the dogs are when it is time for them to come in at night. Their motion will trigger each of the lights in sequence as they move. I also like that I no longer have bugs hovering around the doorways just waiting to come in and proceed to pester me all night long. The light is not bright enough to read by without eye strain, but it is considerably brighter than one would expect. Another nice thing about these lights is that they do not use a fistful of AAA or AA batteries. These use what appear to be cell phone batteries. (In fact, if any of the batteries fail, as I'm sure they will, I intend to try using my old cell phone batteries as replacements.)
