Not sure what type of grass is but it sure does grow fast. On my first attempt I sprinkled some seed just for fun on top of the soil (hard compact) doing nothing else but watering and waiting and about two weeks later it is about 3 inches tall and luscious. The grass is very thin and a little lighter green than st augustine but is great to make your lawn look fuller and grows great in the shade (go figure)

My second attempt is spreading the seed and laying soil on top. It's day three now, not seeing anything yet but I will update later

All in all this stuff is great, even if you're starting fresh you could definitely grow a whole residential mid-sized lawn with this bag.
