We oredered four (4) Strathwood Basics Hardwood Chaise Lounge chairs with accompanying cushions. While the chairs are great (very easy to assemble), the cushions were a train wreck! Here in Wisconsin, we have no shortage of rain. After the first good rain that we had them outside, the cushion material so filled up with water that we could hardly move them. I question what would have happended if we let them remain fastened to the chairs (big-time rottinmg, I suspect) ... I needed a wheel barrel to move them from our pier to the deck where we hung them in our feeble attempt to dry them out! After we dried them sufficiently (we thought), we moved them into the garage to get them boxed (Amazon won't pay for the packaging of return goods, but they do a great job working the UPS protion of the process). Well, the cushions were still damp, so we hung them in the garage for another four (4) days, with water puddling under them. We finally concluded they would never fully dry, so we boxed them up and the UPS guy picked up the last box today. We went out to a local patio furniture supplier and got cushions that, although not constructed of waterproof material on the outside, had waterproof material around the cushion on the inside. We love our new cushions, but would not recommend anyone purchase the one's from Strathwood unless you plan to have them in a protected area ...

This provides both mechanical and bio filtration of your pond. There should be a link to the pdf manual which will explain everything. I'm not sure if you can post a link here but if you do a search for "Laguna PowerFlo Max Instruction Manual" you will find it.

Anyway, the first chamber (closest to the pump) is a bio-filter. It contains bio-max, a ceramic media which beneficial bacteria can colonize to convert toxic ammonia and nitrites to less toxic substances.

The 2nd and 3rd chambers are the same. They provide mechanical filtration, and are chambers that contain a large piece of foam which filters out particles in the pond water. The chamber closer to the pump gets clogged first, then the other chamber takes over, but eventually you will need to clean both these chambers when both get clogged up.

The reason you have 2 mechanical filtration chambers is so that you don't need to clean it so often! You will only need to take the filter apart to clean it when both 2 and 3 are clogged.

The stated capacity of this filter is for a 800 gallon pond. Of course it depends on how many fish you have in, but it seems rather small for a 800 gallon pond. I would probably use 2 of these for a 800 gallon pond. You can easily fit two of them together with a Y connector such as this: Hagen Laguna Y-Connector with Click-Fit Couplers, 3 at 1-1/2-Inch length
