I've struggled for years to control the algae in my 14 gallon saltwater Oceanic Biocube. Keeping the tank light off, removing 1/2 the bioballs and replacing them with live rock rubble, installing a protein skimmer, and doing weekly water changes (25%) helped control the algae, but didn't entirely cure the problem. After much reading on various aquarist blogs and forums, in my quest for a solution, I purchased the Oceanic Mini Ultraviolette Sterilizer. I wasn't sure that 5 watts would be strong enough for my tank (9 watts is said to be better), but it proved to be just fine for my small tank. Once I got the hose cut to the correct length, the Sterilizer installed in only a few minutes with the use of tools. I've had the Sterilizer installed for nearly a month now, and the tank water is crystal clear. The fish seem much happier too, since they no longer need to live in the dark. I read that the UV bulb needs to be changed every 6 months to retain effectiveness, so I'll be sure to do that. If you struggle with algae in your tank this Sterilizer is a worth buying because it works as promised. Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Oceanic 36011 BiocubeMini Ultraviolet Sterilizer, 5-Watt" are high quality item.
