I think it's a great concept and worth having when you're just starting out, but we had mixed results with it this past season. We wanted to raise a few queens for our own use and to sell, but didn't want to get into grafting. We found that our queens were sometimes reluctant to lay in the cups. We'd put one in and wait 4 days only to open it up and find that she had only just started laying. Sometimes it would take a week or more to get larvae we could place into the queenless hive. Maybe it was just our queens, I don't know. What I do know is that it was just not reliable enough for us to be able to make very many queens as a commercial enterprise. We got by okay, but I'm seriously looking into investing the money to get set up to graft; perhaps take a class on it from someone more experienced.
